- Established in 1884, the University of
Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine is one of the leading
teaching, research, and clinical veterinary institutions in the world.
The School, founded on the recommendation of Penn's School of
Medicine, is the only veterinary school to be developed in association
with a medical school. It is one of only three private veterinary
schools in the nation, the other schools originated as part of
land-grant institutions.
-
- Since the first class of 10 men
graduated in 1887, more than 6,000 veterinarians have graduated from
Penn. Today, the School's alumni are working across the country and
around the world to better the health and welfare of animals and
humans.
-
- Penn Veterinary Medicine graduates
can easily be identified from all other veterinarians by the type of
degree that follows their name. Penn awards its graduates the degree
of Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (V.M.D.).
-
- The mission of the Veterinary
Medical Alumni Society is to promote the interests of the Veterinary
School and the Alumni Society, to encourage and perpetuate the spirit
of good feeling and commonality of interests among graduates of the
Veterinary School, and to assist the School to advance veterinary
education, students, and administration.
-
- The goals of the Society are
accomplished by support of alumni annual giving, publications,
educational meetings, and social events, all of which provide
opportunities for exchange among the School's alumni, faculty,
students, and administration.
-
- All graduates of the School and
its residency and internship programs are members of the Veterinary
Medical Alumni Society.
