Thanks to all who joined us for the Alumni Weekend 2006
in Philadelphia!

We welcomed back almost 300 alumni and friends, and enjoyed the School's first event in the soon-to-open Vernon & Shirley Hill Pavilion, Penn Vet's first new building in 25 years.  We were thrilled see the cool, modern advances in the Hill Pavilion and Ryan Veterinary Hospital, but also shared in the warmth of many memories in Old Vet.

Some additional highlights of the weekend:

  • We enjoyed an amusing perspective by Richard O. Davies, Professor of Physiology/Animal Biology and Hill Pavilion Building Committee Chair, entitled "Noah Meets Mr. Blandings," at the Inn at Penn on Friday evening at our Alumni Dinner.
  • We honored the Class of 1956 with a 50th reunion awards-ceremony at the meeting of the Veterinary Medical Alumni Society, and enjoyed warm memories and a beer with the Class of 1981 for their 25th.
  • We announced a special thanks at our VMAS meeting to Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery at the Widener Hospital for Large Animals, who received the 2006 Teaching Award, selected by the most recently-graduated five classes.
  • We also presented Alumni Awards of merit for our pioneering alumni, including Edward T. Mallinson, V'56; Thomas Sollas, Jr., V'56; Scott Palmer, V'76; Dolores Holle, V'81; and Diane Monsein Levitan, V'91.
  • We consumed endless ice cream with 1990 alumna Janet Mitchell, and her husband Jim of Woodside Farm Creamery, who graciously treated us all to various flavors such as "pumpkin pecan" and "black raspberry."
  • We toured the labs, teaching spaces and library in the Hill Pavilion and the new Student Surgery Suite at Ryan Veterinary Hospital with many current students, several of whom were first-year students.  (They will be the first class to enjoy the learning spaces and resources of the Hill Pavilion, and spared a few hours with us despite a heavy exam on Monday!)
  • We enjoyed current faculty and reminiscing about Classroom A!
  • Our children came home with painted faces & balloon animals, cartoon pictures of themselves, and the experience of touching a live snake and wingless owl.
  • We won prizes for knowing that Omega Tau Sigma was the name of the first Penn Vet fraternity in 1907, and that Josephine Deubler, V'38, is the first female graduate.
  • We reconnected with former classmates, and memorialized our day with pictures taken with our graduation flags.
